Mock Legislature

4-H Mock Legislature Header

Mock Legislature is held under the direction of  the State 4-H Ambassadors and their Advisor, Craig Dart. It is held at the Utah State Capitol building in the House Chambers.

The event includes:

  • Guest speakers
  • A lesson on the legislative process
  • Committee meetings
  • A tour of the Capitol building
  • Rules Committee deciding the order of the bills to be presented
  • Debate over the 15 bills that the youth present

Guest speakers highlight their experiences and knowledge of the United State's Government. Past speakers have included: Spencer Stokes of Stokes Strategies; David Bird, an attorney and professional lobbyist; and the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives.

Utah 4-H has the support and direction of Representative Paul Ray. Members of the Office of Legislative Research to help guide our youth through the legislative process. Throughout the day, Utah Representatives and Senators constantly look in on the proceedings and comment on the success of the program.

To get a feel for what Mock Legislature is all about, listen to this April 25th, 2011 UPR Newsline segment, by Landon Hemsley, who interviewed Representative Paul Ray on the 4-H Mock Legislature experience.  In the April 2013 session the Mock Legislature was also featured on Fox News.

Space is very limited, and you are encouraged to turn in applications early.  Application deadline is March 15th.
