Aggie Adventures for Kids

Utah State University and Utah 4-H have teamed up to create 4-H Aggie Adventures for Kids, a program offering educational day-camps for children and youth in grades 1-8. Camps emphasize hands-on learning and explore a variety of subjects including archeology, robotics, art, history, astronomy, and more!

SPRING 2008 CAMP GUIDE *Grades listed are based on the 2008-2009 school year.*

ROLLER COASTER SCIENCE

(January 26 -- Grades 4-6)

Look at the wild science behind roller coasters and other amusement park rides!

Your mission: design a roller coaster that will give maximum thrills and chills.  You must consider many factors including height of hills, size of loops, and speed of the coaster—all while gravity and friction work against you on the track!

BUG BUDDIES (February 2 -- Grades 1-2)

Take a closer look at the insects and spiders all around us.  Make an insect habitat and a metamorphosis chamber in this creepy, crawly camp!

COOKIN’ UP SCIENCE (February 23 -- Grades 3-5)

Explore basic biology, chemistry, and physics using common items from the kitchen.  Make rock candy, mix up some cornstarch goo, and extract iron from your morning cereal!

ALIEN ENCOUNTERS (March 22 -- Grades 5-8)

Two astronauts have crash-landed on an alien planet and need your assistance!  Using Lego Mindstorms RCXs you will need to design, build, and program a robot in order to help the astronauts communicate with the aliens and solve other mission challenges.  No previous robotics experience is required.

RAINFOREST RAMBLE (March 29 -- Grades 1-2)

Take a journey into a Latin American rainforest to learn about some of the exotic plants and animals that live there.  Conduct some fun hands-on experiments and learn why rainforests are so important.

CRYPTOZOOLOGY (April 19 -- Grades 3-5)

Cryptozoology: the study of creatures whose existence has not been proven.  Take a second look at mysterious creatures such as the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman, and Kraken.  Learn about the mythical and scientific origins of these creatures, and go on a cryptid hunt of your own!

OCEANS OF FUN! (April 26 -- Grades 1-2)

Travel beneath the ocean waves and explore!  Learn about the amazing plants and animals living in the ocean.

MAYAN ADVENTURE (May 3 -- Grades 5-8)

Using Lego Mindstorms NXTs you will design, build, and program a robot in order to explore an ancient Guatemalan Mayan pyramid.  Recover ancient manuscripts, find treasure, and discover the secrets of King Ixtua’s tomb—but watch out for the pyramid’s traps!  No previous robotics experience is required.  (This camp is back by popular request, with three new missions!)

WALK THROUGH THE STARS (May 10 -- Grades 2-3)

Let the night sky tell you a story!  Find out what really makes stars shine, create your own constellation, and take a look at the night sky through our StarLab mini planetarium.

GEOTROOPERS (May 17 -- Grades 4-6)

Learn about GPS and GIS technology as you go on a GPS treasure hunt course, locate geocaches, and complete other GPS challenges.  No previous GPS experience is required

All camps run on Saturdays from 10:00-3:00, and are held on the USU campus. Camp cost is $25.

Rockhounds (Grades 3-4)

Take a closer look at the world of rocks, minerals, and fossils.  We’ll break open a geode, eat crystals, and pan for gold (or iron pyrite, rather—we’re no fools!)

Fun-damental Science (Grades 1-2)

This camp involves fun, hands-on activities that teach basic science principles.  You’ll explore bubbles, magnets, potions, light and much more.

Magician’s Laboratory (Grades 2-3)

Make your cereal dance, write with invisible ink, and learn the secret behind the famous tablecloth trick.  Explore gravity, reactions, and optical illusions as you learn about the cool science behind magic.  Amaze your family with a magic show on the last day of camp!

 
Old Main Chronicles (Grades 4-5)

Grab your Seeing Stones and take a closer look at the amazing world around you.  In this camp—based on the popular Spiderwick Chronicles—we’ll use the 4-H Aggie Adventures Field Guide to investigate the seen- and unseen-creatures and animals around us, and even look for some Spiderwick creatures.  Watch out for the ogres!

Dinosaurs! (Grades 1-2)

Take a journey back millions of years ago to the days when dinosaurs ruled the earth.  Investigate T-rex teeth, cast a fossil, and create your own dinosaur!

Mindstorms Inventors (Grades 5-8)

Let your imagination go wild!  Design and build a Lego Mindstorms NXT invention, then bring it to life with programming.  Create a catapult, peacock, dragster, voice-controlled car, biting rattlesnake—or invent one of your own!  No previous robotics experience required.

Slimey, Gooey, Gross (Grades 2-3)

Conduct all kinds of icky, sticky experiments!  Learn about science as you mix up a batch of oobleck, grow your own “worms,” and make glow-in-the-dark slime.

Island Adventure (Grades 4-5)

Travel to a remote, secret island and spend a week exploring.  In this camp—based on the book Nim’s Islandyou’ll learn about ocean and coastal life, including sea turtles, seals, sea birds and lizards.  Use GPS technology to map and study the island, and learn about desert island survival by foraging food, building a shelter, and finding fresh water.

Amusement Park Science (Grades 6-8)

Look at the wild science behind roller coasters, carousels, sky slings and other amusement park rides.  We’ll learn about the G-force, make a homemade roller coaster, and test the laws of physics at the Logan Celebration Centre amusement park on the last day of camp.

Wilderness Dataloggers: Code Red at Green Geyser (Grades 5-8)

A severe storm has hit Green Geyser Wilderness Park and endangered the ecosystem and human visitors.  Using Lego Mindstorms RCXs, you will need to design, build, and program a robot to perform tasks such as salvaging a bridge, extracting microbe samples from geysers, and placing a radio collar on a grizzly bear.  Watch out for the poison ivy!  No previous robotics experience required.

Learn about the amazing powers of light, motion, and heat energy.  Build a PV solar cell house, launch a solar balloon, and conduct other fun, energizing hands-on experiments!

Cool Careers in Science (Grades 6-8)

Learn about some cool science careers such as a rainforest ecologist, outer space geologist, and forensic scientist.  Take a closer look at what these scientists do, and become a scientist for a day as you hunt for pollen, study insects to learn about water quality, and use science to solve crimes.

CAMP FEES: Camp fees range from $79.00-$159.00.
Multiple Camp Discount: Sign up for 3 or more camps (per household) and get $5 off each camp fee.
Early-Bird Discount: Sign up for 2 or more camps (per household) by May 1, 2008, and get $10.00 off total camp fees.
Scholarships: There are a limited number of need-based scholarships available; please contact our office for more information.
